The first school was held in Asa Clark’s parlor for three years from 1840 to 1843. Mary Williams of Waukesha was the first teacher. In 1843 the first school was built with log benches for seating at the present site of the First Baptist Church at the corner of Main St. and Prospect Ave. The town was incorporated the year before in 1842. In 1848 the 20 x 30 foot structure and the benches were replaced with pine from Asa Clark's mill. At this time there were only three community schools in the entire county.
